MVD

The New Mexico Motor Vehicle Division plays a critical role in saving lives through organ, eye and tissue donation.  They serve on our state team, Donate Life New Mexico, striving to ensure they do everything they can to help New Mexicans register to donate life.

The MVD office is often the first place where people are asked if they want to be an organ, eye and tissue donor.  Those who say “yes” are entered in to the Donate Life New Mexico Organ and Tissue Donor Registry.  This information serves as the legal record of donor designation for organs and tissues.  Since all New Mexicans periodically visit the MVD or their website, their support is crucial to increasing donor designations.  By asking about donation with every person who receives or renews their driver’s license or state ID card, these MVD staff are helping provide a future for the thousands of men, women and children waiting for a transplant.

The New Mexico MVD has become increasingly more important as legislation was passed in 2003 regarding first person designation.  This ensures that a person’s designated decision to donate cannot be overridden by anyone else.  So when you say “I’m a donor, it’s on my license” you can be assured your wishes will be honored.

Driver’s Education Program

New Mexico law requires Driver’s Ed. programs to educate students about organ and tissue donation.  A video provides students with the information they need to make this life-saving decision at the time they obtain their driver’s license.

NMDS partners with the New Mexico Traffic Safety Bureau in providing donation information in their Driver’s Education Teacher’s Certification process.
