John Stevens
Eye Donor
/February 8, 2025
The Genesis program was amazing. My father always talked about a program of donation and was first made aware of Vanderbilt’s program in 2004. Never in my wildest dreams could I have imagined the outreach and support. My dad always wanted to help others but wasn’t always the best at showing it. It’s a bit unconventional. I’m in the medical field and this was his last way to support my studies to help others and make the world better for the next person. He was able to donate his eyes.
His passions were nature and art. He was an amazing electrician at his prime, well respected and pretty fearless. Loss is a pretty hard grief to bare. I didn’t completely understand his thoughts but now I do.
I’m forever grateful.
Saying thank you
Many donor families find that corresponding with the transplant recipient or recipients can be a powerful experience. Donor families can take comfort in sharing stories and sending well wishes to those who live on because of their loved one.
Should you choose to connect, we're here to help. Letters and cards can be a tremendous gift to both the donor families and recipients. To protect everyone, we provide guidelines for communication. Names remain confidential unless both parties agree to share those with one another, and we provide a correspondence address. We are happy to share sample letters to help you get started.
