Native American Heritage Month and the Gift of Donation
November 5, 2025

November is Native American Heritage Month, a time to celebrate the strength, traditions, and wisdom of Native peoples throughout New Mexico and across the nation. It’s also a moment to reflect on how we can come together to heal, support, and uplift one another, values deeply rooted in Indigenous culture.
At New Mexico Donor Services, we honor the sacred connections that bind us to one another, to our ancestors, and to the generations yet to come. Organ, eye and tissue donation is one powerful way to extend that spirit of giving and community care. Many Native cultures view life as a sacred circle, where every beginning is connected to every ending. In that way, the gift of donation reflects a powerful continuation of life and purpose.
By increasing awareness and registration within Native communities, we can bring more hope, healing, and life to the one in four Native Americans waiting in New Mexico.
Karina Loretto, New Mexico Donor Services (NMDS) Native American Affairs Coordinator, raises awareness about NMDS all year long, promoting education and community engagement to our Native American communities, who are at a disproportionate need for transplants.
